Before you leave Makkah

The farewell tawaf

Your last act in Makkah is a final tawaf around the House. Then you go home a different person.

Draft. Not yet checked by a scholar.

What to do

  • Perform tawaf al-wadaʿ, seven circuits, as the last thing you do in Makkah before you leave.
  • Pray two units behind Maqam Ibrahim if you can, or anywhere in the mosque.
  • Drink Zamzam with an intention.
  • Leave without staying long afterwards.

أُمِرَ النَّاسُ أَنْ يَكُونَ آخِرُ عَهْدِهِمْ بِالْبَيْتِ، إِلاَّ أَنَّهُ خُفِّفَ عَنِ الْحَائِضِ

The people were commanded that their last moment [in Makkah] be at the House, except that this was lightened for the woman who is menstruating.

Narrated by ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās Sahih al-Bukhari 1755 Sahih (authentic) 1

Why we do it

The Prophet ﷺ told people that their last moment in Makkah should be at the House. You arrived at the House and you leave from it.

مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ لِمَا شُرِبَ لَهُ

The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.

Your heart today

This tawaf is quieter than the others. You are saying goodbye, and you do not know whether you will come back. Ask Allah to accept everything, to forgive what you got wrong, and to let you return.

Then think about home. The sign of an accepted hajj is a better life afterwards. Decide now on one or two things you will change, and hold on to them in the first forty days back.
