What to do

  • Enter ihram for hajj from where you are staying, if you are performing tamattuʿ and came out of ihram after your umrah. Make the intention and begin the talbiyah.
  • Go to Mina. Most groups travel in the morning.
  • Pray in Mina Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha and the next morning’s Fajr, each in its own time. The four-unit prayers are usually shortened to two.
  • Spend the night in Mina. This follows the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.

Why we do it

Mina on the 8th is a quiet beginning. The Prophet ﷺ spent this day and night there before setting out for Arafah. It is a day of gathering yourself, not of rushing.

Your heart today

From today, you are a guest who has accepted the invitation. Say the talbiyah often and think about its words: here I am. Leave the world behind a little more with each one.

Tomorrow is the most important day of your life so far. Go to bed early. Do not stay up chatting. Read through your Arafat plan once more before you sleep.

Du’as for today

The talbiyah

Wann From entering ihram until you begin stoning Jamrat al-ʿAqabah on the 10th (the view of most scholars). Men say it aloud, women quietly.

UmschriftLabbaika Allāhumma labbaik, labbaika lā scharīka laka labbaik, innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, lā scharīka lak.

BedeutungHere I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. All praise and all blessing are Yours, and the dominion. You have no partner.
