If you miss the standing at Arafah, you have missed the hajj. Nothing else can replace it. The Prophet ﷺ said it in three words.
Hajj is Arafah. Whoever comes [to Arafah] on the night of Jamʿ [Muzdalifah] before dawn breaks has caught the hajj. The days of Mina are three. Whoever hurries on after two days commits no sin, and whoever stays on commits no sin.

What this day is
No other day of the year is like it.
There is no day on which Allah frees more servants from the Fire than the Day of Arafah. He draws near, then He speaks proudly of them to the angels and says: What do these people want?

Allah draws near to the people standing on that plain and asks the angels, “What do these people want?” Think about that question. On the day you stand there, you should have an answer.
It was on this day, at this place, that the verse completing the religion was revealed.3 And the Prophet ﷺ said that the best du’a is the du’a of the Day of Arafah.4
How the Prophet ﷺ spent it
He gave a sermon, then prayed Dhuhr and Asr together. Then he went to the place of standing, faced the qiblah, and stayed there making du’a until the sun had set.
He faced the qiblah and remained standing until the sun set, the yellow light faded a little and the disc of the sun was gone.

He did not climb the mountain, and he told people they did not need to stand where he stood.
I sacrificed here, and all of Mina is a place of sacrifice, so sacrifice where you are staying. I stood here, and all of Arafah is a place of standing. I stood here, and all of Jamʿ [Muzdalifah] is a place of standing.

You do not need to reach Jabal al-Rahmah. Inside your tent, in the shade, facing the qiblah, is a place of standing. What matters is that you are inside the boundaries of Arafah, and that your heart is present.
The mistakes that cost people this day
These are the things returning pilgrims mention most often:
- Treating it like a picnic. Tea, talk, photographs. An hour passes, then another.
- Arriving exhausted. Pilgrims who stay up late in Mina, or walk in the midday sun, sleep through the most precious hours.
- Having nothing prepared. Hands raised, mind empty, after two minutes the du’a runs out.
- The phone. Messages, calls, video calls home. Each one takes you out of the place you are standing in.
- Leaving the boundary. Some areas near Arafah are outside it. Stay where your group tells you, inside the marked boundary.
- Leaving too early. The Prophet ﷺ stayed until after sunset.
A plan for the afternoon
The exact times change with the date and your group’s schedule. Here is a shape that works for many people. The planner below follows it.
- Before midday. Rest. Drink water. Read Qur’an and say the talbiyah. Do not spend your strength yet.
- Midday prayer. Listen to the sermon if you can. Pray Dhuhr and Asr together.
- Repentance and praise. Begin with praise of Allah and blessings on the Prophet ﷺ. Then ask forgiveness for your sins, one by one, by name.
- Family and the dead. Your parents, your spouse, your children, your relatives, and those who have died. Name them.
- Others and the ummah. Everyone who asked you for du’a. Then the whole ummah.
- The last hour before sunset. The most precious time. Stand if you can, raise your hands, and return to what matters most to you. Say the best words, again and again.
The best words of the Day of Arafah
Wann On the Day of Arafah, many times, between your own du'as.
UmschriftLā ilāha illallāhu wahdahū lā scharīka lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa 'alā kulli schai'in qadīr.
BedeutungThere is no god but Allah, alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things.
Quelle Dschami' at-Tirmidhi 3585 4
If you are a woman on your period
Your period does not stop you from any part of Arafah. You stand, make du’a and remember Allah like everyone else.
[When her period began on the way to hajj and she wept, the Prophet ﷺ said:] This is something Allah has written for the daughters of Adam. Do everything the pilgrim does, except do not perform tawaf of the House until you are clean.

If you are not at hajj this year
If you are reading this at home, the Day of Arafah is still yours. Fast it, make du’a, and pray for the pilgrims. And start preparing for the day you stand there yourself.
