11 to 13 Dhul Hijjah

The days of Tashriq

Back in Mina. Each day you stone the three pillars and stand in du'a after the first two.

Draft. Not yet checked by a scholar.

What to do

  • Spend the nights in Mina.
  • Stone all three jamarat each day after midday: the small one, then the middle one, then Jamrat al-ʿAqabah, seven pebbles each, saying Allahu akbar with each.
  • Stop and make du’a after the first and the second, facing the qiblah, for a long time. Do not stop after the third.
  • Leave on the 12th before sunset, or stay and stone on the 13th as well. Both are allowed.

And remember Allah during [specific] numbered days. Then whoever hastens [his departure] in two days - there is no sin upon him; and whoever delays [until the third] - there is no sin upon him - for him who fears Allah. And fear Allah and know that unto Him you will be gathered.

Qur'an Al-Baqara 2:203 Translation: Saheeh International 1

Why we do it

After stoning the first jamrah, Ibn ʿUmar would move forward to level ground, stand facing the qiblah for a long time and make du'a with his hands raised. He did the same after the middle jamrah, then stoned Jamrat al-ʿAqabah without stopping there, and said: This is how I saw the Prophet ﷺ do it.

Narrated by Sālim, from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar Sahih al-Bukhari 1751 Sahih (authentic) 2

Many pilgrims throw their pebbles and rush away. The Sunnah is to stop, step aside from the crowd, and stand in du’a for a long time. These are some of the least crowded moments of du’a in all of hajj. Do not miss them.

Your heart today

The great days are behind you, and tiredness sets in. This is where many people let go. Hold on. These are days of remembering Allah, as the verse says. Keep your tongue busy with dhikr, guard your temper in the crowds, and keep asking.

Du’as for today

Good in this world and the next

When In tawaf, between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone. It is also one of the best du'as at any time.

TransliterationRabbanā ātinā fid-dunyā ḥasanatan wa fil-ākhirati ḥasanatan wa qinā ʿadhāban-nār.

MeaningOur Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
